At lunchtime we dock in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. The city, which started because of a gold rush in 1880, is located at the foot of Mount Juneau. It has retained its historical, frontier ruggedness, while still exuding a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Here, along the Gastineau Channel and surrounded by glacier-capped mountains rising thousands of feet, you will have the opportunity to enjoy some of Alaska’s most beautiful scenery, including fjords, the majestically Mendehall Glacier and many hiking trails through the largest temperate rainforest in the state. Helicopter and float-plane flights are some of the optional activities available.

Otherwise, spend time exploring this beautiful city at your own pace and as your heart desires. Don’t miss our departure later this evening!

Now a beautiful and popular borough located on the Alaska panhandle, Skagway was once a little more than a small and lawless settlement. All quickly changed when gold was discovered in the Klondike region of the Yukon Territory. Thousands of dreamers in search of riches soon made their way to the community. From July to October 1897 the area had grown from a dishevelled collection of tents into a town with well laid out streets, buildings, stores, saloons, gambling and dance houses and a population of approximately 20,000.

Skagway is the smallest borough in Alaska and is located in a narrow glaciated valley at the head of the Taiya Inlet, the northernmost fjord on Alaska’s Inside Passage. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, glistening glaciers and the beautiful Alaskan sea, Skagway is worth visiting for its breath-taking geography alone. Remember it is from Skagway that you can ride on the world- famous White Pass and Yukon Railroad, do look out for this optional excursion.

Dag 6: 15 September 2020

In the early hours of the morning we cruise through one of Alaska’s lesser-known gems. Endicott Arm Fjord marks the southern edge of Fords Terror Wilderness area. As we drift through its 30- mile-long stretch, we can’t help but be awed by the surrounding granite cliffs, mountain valleys and dozens of gushing waterfalls. Drifting icebergs, deep blue waters and a spectacular tidewater glacier only add to this natural spectacle’s appeal.

We walk to the Athabasca Falls – at 23 meters in height, not the tallest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies but it is on of the most powerful, due to the sheer volume of water flowing into the gorge from the Athabasca Rover, fed by the massive Columbia Icefield.
